LOOK:

Chapter 1 of Job is raw and unsettling. It doesn’t give neat answers, but rather reshapes how we think about God, suffering, and faith. We need to embrace that a righteous life is not a shield against suffering. We need to let go of the idea that “doing right” ensures comfort. Moreover, we need to stop interpreting automatically that hardship is God’s punishment of us. Job is never told “why” he incurred all of his losses, and we won’t know the “why” behind our own suffering.

Each local church is in a constant battle against the forces of evil. There are false prophets and false teachers. Satan is the originator of false doctrines, for he is a liar from the beginning (John 8:44). It is not enough for a local church to teach sound doctrine and to proclaim the Gospel. The church must also defend the faith by exposing lies and opposing the doctrines of demons (1 Tim. 4:1).

LOOK:

Paul had taught the Galatian Christians that their salvation depended solely on their faith in Jesus. This great gift was by the grace, the unmerited favor, of God. The Judaizers had come along to add another requirement: Gentile converts must become Jewish proselytes. The old and the new way must not be mixed. Salvation, by God’s graciousness, is now free. It comes exclusively through faith in Jesus. He says, don’t clutter up free grace with the old out-moded forms of gaining favor with God through the kinds of activities which the law required.

Christians live “in this present age” (NIV), but they do not live like it or for it. Christ has redeemed us from this evil age (Gal. 1:4), and we must not be conformed to it (Rom. 12:1–2). Neither should we walk according to its standards (Eph. 2:2). We have tasted the powers of “the coming age” (Heb. 6:5, NIV), and we should not desire to cultivate the present age with its shallowness and godlessness.

LOOK:

God makes two wonderful promises to His people in this chapter. In 1:7, He assures them of His goodness and tells them they will be safe so long as they trust in Him. In 1:12, He assures them that He will not afflict them again with the Assyrian armies the way Israel had been afflicted before. No matter what the difficulties may be, we can trust God to care for us and see us through.
