There are many people in our world today who could be a “Nicodemus.” There are people who believe they are morally upright, religious, sincere, and a good person. They believe that if they only do enough good deeds, public service, or attend church enough, or take Holy Communion regularly, that they’ll be right with God when it comes to their deaths. But as we learned today, Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus turns that on its head. Salvation comes through Jesus alone. We must pray to Jesus and as tell Him that we accept Him as our Lord and Savior through seeking forgiveness for our sins and acknowledging Him as the Son of God who came to earth to die for us.

In the clearing of the temple, Jesus brought forth God’s standards of what is right and what is wrong. While legalism was denounced by Jesus, holiness was maintained. The issue at hand was not business or profit making as such but the mockery of the entire sacrificial system of the temple and the exploitation of devout men and women by greedy individuals who were capitalizing on religious sentiment.

Jesus is always available and willing to meet our needs. Where is the “wine” level (zest for life) in your life right now? Full? Half full? Empty? What is draining you? What area seems like stale water in an old jug? Ask Jesus to renew that for you!

Philip’s example of inviting Nathanael to “come and see” Jesus encourages us to share our faith with others, not by forcing our beliefs, but by inviting them to experience Jesus for themselves. Those of us who are believers are called to follow Jesus, called to proclaim Him, called to reveal Him to others, and called to share Him with the world. Let’s be intentional to create curiosity about Jesus and invite them to “come and see” at their own pace.

John 1:12–13 gives us the marvelous promise of God that anyone who receives Christ will be born again and enter the family of God! John says more about this new birth in John 3, but he points out here that it is a spiritual birth from God, not a physical birth that depends on human nature.

The Light is still shining! Have you personally received the Light and become a child of God?
