LOOK:
Beware of competing gods/idols in our lives. When Jesus calls us to follow Him, we either obey Him and discover the joy of being His follower, or we unwittingly follow our idols of comfort and pleasure. When we don’t want to be inconvenienced, or we think it cuts into our time, or the call looks hard, etc, we have potentially made our comfort and pleasure an idol that we are capable of worshipping on a regular basis.

One of the main teachings of this section of the Bible is that God punishes sin, though he loves sinners, and that he takes care of those who trust in him. The brook provided water until it dried up because there was no rain. God had a poor widow ready to help. Someone has said that Elijah became a foreign missionary. Zerephath was in Sidon. What a blessing he was to her and her family.

LOOK:
There are consequences of disobedience to God. There are dangers in following wicked leaders. So let’s remember that it’s important to choose good company, remember the reality of God’s judgment on sin, and the lasting impact of our actions and choices – particularly in leadership roles.

LOOK:
Asa’s story illustrates that we are not bound by the sins of our parents and can actively choose to follow God, even when faced with a family history of disobedience. More specifically, Asa took decisive actions to remove idols and cleanse the land to promote positive change within a community. Like Asa, we are to seek God in all of our decisions. We want to rely on God for strength and wisdom.

LOOK:
Jeroboam didn’t fool God, and neither will we. He sees our sins, knows our desires, and weighs our actions. But if we’re willing to step into God’s light, repent and seek His forgiveness, we can have a new beginning. Let’s obey God and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus!
