LOOK:

When the enemy fails in his attacks from the outside, he then begins to attack from within; and one of his favorite weapons is selfishness. If he can get us thinking only about ourselves and what we want, then he will win the victory before we realize that he is even at work.

LOOK:

Did you identify with any of the tactics the Enemy used to stop God’s work? He used ridicule (4:1–6) and plots of war (vv. 7–9), which resulted in difficulties within the Jewish ranks: discouragement (v. 10), fear (vv. 11–23).

Referring to Satan, Paul wrote, “For we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Cor. 2:11). This chapter presents four of Satan’s devices for opposing the Lord’s work, and it also tells us how God’s people can be steadfast and defeat the enemy. If you start building, you will soon be battling; so, be prepared!

Some 40 different sections of wall are mentioned in the chapter, each assigned to a different group. To work effectively and quickly, the wall builders displayed a sense of common purpose and commitment. A common sense of purpose is also important today if Christians are to work together in God’s kingdom. That sense of common purpose can unite us, even when we differ in convictions or doctrine.

LOOK:

Whenever God wants to get a work done, He lays hold of willing people. The walls of Jerusalem had been ruined; a small remnant had returned; and there was much work that needed to be done. God was looking for someone to go to the ruined city and restore safety and order. Nehemiah was to be that person. Is there a work that God wants to do through you? Are you willing?
